HL7 V3 Training

A 2 day training course providing an overview of the HL7 Version 3 standard.

Who should attend?

This is a 2-day training course which is aimed at helping those involved with the design, development, implementation, deployment and support of systems that use (or will use) the HL7 Version 3 standard.

It is an ideal course for those needing to know about HL7 Version 3. HL7 Version 3 (and CDA) play a role in the exchange of data between organizations. An example is the English National Programme for IT / Connecting for Health.

After attending you will have a strong understanding and knowledge of the HL7 Version 3 standard, how it is used and why HL7 Version 3 is important.

The course offers an introduction to the HL7 Version 3 standard, designed for those who need to implement it or understand how it will impact their system integration strategy.

    • Reference Information Model (RIM)
    • Data Types, Data Type flavours
    • The refinement process: from RIM to R-MIM and CMETs
    • Interactions, Application Roles and Trigger Events

  • The HL7 version 3 publication
    • An Overview of the HL7 domains
  • Vocabularies and Terminologies (e.g. SNOMED)
  • Use of ISO OIDs
  • Example domains, with examples
    • Domain: Patient Administration
    • Domain: Observation Reporting and Order Entry
    • Domain: Message wrappers
  • Clinical Statements and Templates
  • Clinical Document Architecture - CDA
  • Localization + NPfIT MiM
  • Summary

Prerequisites:

A basic understanding of healthcare IT systems and the requirements for integration.

Some knowledge of data modelling would be helpful.

HL7 v2 and XML not required.

Students should have a notebook PC as exercises include PC based work on sample messages.

René Spronk, HL7/IHE/DICOM Trainer, Ringholm.

o René has been providing both HL7 version 2 as well as HL7 version 3 training all around Europe since 2001. He has first hand experience in implementing HL7 version 2 as well as HL7 version 3 interfaces

Other tutors may be present should the number of trainees be larger than 20.

The Conference Centre is situated in the Regent's College campus, in the centre of London's peaceful Regent’s Park. The closest Underground station is Baker Street. On leaving Baker Street tube station turn left and take the next available left into York Gate, continue into Regent's Park over York Bridge. The main entrance is on the left. Total walking time is 5 minutes.
